I really didn’t understand anything about the grid, distributed energy, or even how solar panels worked before Empowered: Energy Heroes. I understood that shifting to renewables was necessary, but I had no idea the scope or the complexity of that shift.
I’ve been educated and inspired by this project. Empowered: Energy Heroes opened my eyes not only to the subject of energy but to the necessity of questioning the infrastructures and services we take for granted. So much of the comfort that we in the US are accustomed to exists beyond our comprehension. We expect to flip a switch and the lights will turn on, open a faucet and water will flow, pick up our smartphone and connect to the internet. The world is new and changing, and we should be questioning where do these given comforts come from, when were they built, do they still serve us, and is there a better, cheaper, cleaner way?
Kim studied film at Cornell University and has since worked on narrative films such as ‘Little Women’ (Sony Pictures, 2019) and ‘Jungle Cruise’ (Disney Pictures, 2020) in the visual effects and camera departments. From an educational background that included marine biology and language, she landed on filmmaking because of the opportunity to inspire change. She can think of no other medium with such power to shift public perception or promote important ideals.
